Sleeves, Toploaders & Penny Sleeves: The UK Trading Card Gear Guide (2026)
Share
Half of looking after a trading card is choosing the right plastic to put it in. Get this wrong and you scuff the corners, scratch the surface, or worse β let humidity in and watch a card warp over six months.
This is a UK collector's gear guide for 2026: what each piece of kit does, which brands actually deliver, what you need versus what you can skip, and how much to spend.
The five things you actually need
Before we get into brands, here's the kit list. For a serious collector, the full kit is around Β£40 to set up and then Β£10β15/month to maintain as your collection grows.
- Penny sleeves β the thin first-layer sleeves that touch the card
- Perfect-fit sleeves (optional) β tighter sub-penny sleeves used for the most premium cards
- Toploaders β rigid plastic holders for valuable cards
- Card savers β semi-rigid holders specifically for cards going to grading
- Binders and storage boxes β long-term storage
Everything else (deck boxes, magnetic one-touches, art-protectors) is for niche use cases. The five above will cover 95% of what any UK collector needs.
Penny sleeves
Penny sleeves are the thin, slightly cloudy sleeves you use on every card you actually care about. They cost about a penny each (hence the name) and exist purely to stop the card from scuffing against anything else.
What to buy:
- Ultra Pro Standard Soft Sleeves β the market standard. 100 sleeves for Β£1.50β2 in the UK. Acid-free PVC-free polypropylene. Fits standard 63 Γ 88mm cards. Available everywhere.
- Dragon Shield Standard Sleeves (clear) β slightly thicker, slightly better optical clarity. 100 sleeves for Β£2.50β3. Worth the upgrade if your cards are going into binders where you want to actually see them.
What to avoid: Cheap unbranded penny sleeves from Vinted or AliExpress. They're often not acid-free, they sometimes contain plasticisers that can off-gas and damage cards over years, and the sizing is frequently a hair off standard.
How many to buy: Enough for every card in your collection plus 20%. Cheap to over-buy.
Perfect-fit sleeves
Perfect-fits are smaller, tighter sleeves designed to fit inside a penny sleeve for double-sleeved protection. They sit so snug against the card that there's no internal movement. Used for: high-value cards, cards going to grading, cards being shipped.
What to buy:
- KMC Perfect Fit Sleeves (clear) β Japanese-made, the long-standing standard. 100 sleeves for Β£4β5. Tighter fit than the alternatives.
- Dragon Shield Perfect Fit (clear) β the Western alternative, slightly looser fit but more widely stocked. 100 sleeves for Β£3.50β4.
Application tip: Slide the perfect-fit on upside down (open end facing the bottom of the card), then slide the whole sleeved card into the penny sleeve right way up. That way both sleeves' open ends are sealed against the opposite ends, eliminating any dust ingress point.
Toploaders
Toploaders are the rigid plastic holders that take a sleeved card and hold it stiff. They're the difference between a card surviving the post and a card arriving with corner damage.
What to buy:
- Ultra Pro 35pt Toploaders β the standard. Β£3β4 for 25. 35pt thickness fits a sleeved card with one layer of penny sleeve.
- Ultra Pro 75pt Toploaders β for double-sleeved cards (penny + perfect-fit). Β£3.50β4.50 for 25.
- Ultra Pro 100pt+ Toploaders β for thick cards, jersey/relic cards, foil-coated game cards. Buy as needed.
Tip: Always use a team bag (a small resealable polypropylene bag) around the toploaded card. Toploaders are open at one end and a card can slide out if the toploader is dropped open-side-down. The team bag stops that and adds another layer of dust protection. Β£2 for 100 team bags.
Card savers
Card savers are semi-rigid holders specifically required by PSA for submissions. They look like flexible toploaders. The reason they exist: PSA needs to be able to slide the card out of the holder during grading without forcing it, and a rigid toploader doesn't allow that.
What to buy:
- Card Saver 1 β the PSA-mandated holder for grading submissions. Β£6 for 50. Don't buy anything else if you're sending to PSA.
If you're not sending cards to PSA, you don't need card savers. Use toploaders instead.
Binders and storage boxes
Where the cards actually live when they're not being looked at.
Binders (the recommended type):
- Vault X Premium 9-Pocket Binder β UK-made, side-loading, no metal rings (which prevents the spine wear that destroys old binders). Β£25 for the standard size. Holds 360 cards.
- Ultra Pro Eclipse 12-Pocket Pro-Binder β bigger binder, holds 480 cards. Β£30.
Storage boxes (the recommended type):
- BCW Cardboard Storage Boxes β the cheap, reliable, decades-old standard. 800-count box: Β£5β7. Acid-free cardboard. Use them in stacks.
- BCW Plastic Storage Boxes β for cards already in toploaders. 100-count toploader-sized box: Β£8β10. Stackable, dust-proof.
What to avoid: PVC-page binders sold cheaply on eBay or AliExpress. PVC pages off-gas plasticisers that bond to card surfaces over months and produce a permanent "PVC haze" that grading companies will downgrade for.
Storage environment
The plastic only does its job if the room around the plastic is sane.
- Temperature: 15β22Β°C. Stable, not fluctuating.
- Humidity: 35β55% relative humidity. Above 65% encourages warping; below 25% promotes static.
- Light: Cards stored in binders/boxes are fine. Cards on display should not be in direct sunlight β UV fades inks over months.
- What not to store cards near: radiators, exterior walls (in old UK housing β damp), bathrooms, the kitchen.
A small hygrometer (Β£8 on Amazon) tells you in real time what the room you're storing cards in is doing.
The starter kit
If you're starting from zero and want a serious collector's storage kit, here's exactly what to buy and where:
- 100 Ultra Pro penny sleeves (Β£2)
- 100 KMC perfect-fit sleeves (Β£4)
- 25 Ultra Pro 35pt toploaders (Β£3)
- 100 team bags (Β£2)
- One Vault X Premium 9-Pocket Binder (Β£25)
- One BCW 800-count storage box (Β£6)
- One small hygrometer (Β£8)
- Total: Β£50 (plus shipping)
That kit will see you through your first 500 cards and you'll only need to top up the consumables as the collection grows.
What we use
Honest answer: we use Ultra Pro for penny sleeves, KMC for perfect-fits, Ultra Pro for toploaders, and Vault X for binders. We've tested most alternatives and these are what we keep coming back to.
Most UK card shops stock these brands β Magic Madhouse, Asgard Games, Chaos Cards all carry the full lineup. Buy from them rather than Amazon if you can; the prices are usually identical and the cards stay with people who care.
Browse our current sets β every card we ship goes out in proper kit. Pennies, fits, toploaders, team bags, rigid mailer. The way it should.
